USA 2-0 Australia: USMNT Cruise Into Knockouts as Pochettino’s Side Impress Again

June 22, 2026

By Zach Lowy

After producing one of their greatest performances in World Cup history en route to a 4-1 demolition of Paraguay, the US Men’s National Team continued its phenomenal start to the tournament in Seattle.

There were plenty of question marks going into the game, as Christian Pulisic had made way at halftime in the opening match after picking up a calf injury that ruled him out of the second match. But Mauricio Pochettino’s side quickly assuaged that trepidation, forcing Australia into their own half and dominating proceedings with intense pressing and confident possession play.

USA Dominates Again Despite Pulisic’s Absence

Once again, the Stars and Stripes got off to an early start and opened the scoring via an own goal, with Folarin Balogun picking up the ball at the touchline and firing a low, driven cross across goal, which took a deflection off Cameron Burgess and ended up in the back of the net.

Having previously started as a center forward vs. Paraguay, Balogun was utilized in a wide position to accommodate the entrance of Ricardo Pepi. He nevertheless made his mark with superb hold-up play and a breathtaking change of pace.

Early Breakthrough Gives USA Control

The United States continued to force the issue, pinning the Socceroos back and banging on the door until finally breaking it down before halftime. Rather than trying to cross for a header, Antonee Robinson sent his free kick towards the edge of the box, which ricocheted off an opponent and sat up perfectly for Alex Freeman to head home. Initially ruled out due to offside, the goal was given after a VAR review, enabling the hosts to go into the interval two goals to the good.

Australia Respond, but USA Hold Firm

However, the Socceroos were able to take control of the game after the break thanks to an effective triple substitution, with Nestory Irankunda in particular causing the hosts issues with his pace and finesse. Balogun very nearly put the game to bed after racing in from his own half and finding himself in prime scoring position; he couldn’t sort his feet out in time and allowed Australia to get back and block his shot. This would’ve been far more costly if the USMNT hadn’t shown plenty of discipline and determination in their low block.

Instead, they weathered the storm and proved that they have the ability to not just rack up attacking momentum but also to soak up pressure and suffer through large swaths of the game with their backs to the wall.

USA Secure Knockout Qualification

Despite Australia’s best attempts, the USMNT managed to pull away with a 2-0 victory at Lumen Field, thus joining Mexico as the only teams qualified for the knockouts. What’s more, if Paraguay can win or draw against Türkiye, USA will cement the top spot in the group, thus enabling Pochettino to rest key players against Türkiye.

Whether that happens or not, Team USA will like their chances of coming away with three wins from three as they prepare to face the Turks in Southern California. They don’t just have a solid, cohesive unit; they have thousands of fans who are willing them to victory and supporting them every step of the way. If USA is to continue its sensational World Cup run, they’ll need their fans to keep up their passionate chanting and provide the 12th man that the team so desperately needs.

Pochettino Praises Fans and Team Connection

After the game, I was emotional because the atmosphere was amazing, fans were amazing,” stated Pochettino. “The warm reception in the way they support us and celebrate a victory, makes it very emotional. Our players were emotional too. A perfect connection between the team and fans makes us very proud. To connect with the people is what we wanted, if we want to achieve good things, we need that support. We don’t only need the Seattle support, we need all of the countries’ support.

Can USMNT Maintain Momentum Without Pulisic?

USA v Aus

June 19, 2026

After delivering arguably their greatest FIFA World Cup performance of all time, the United States Men’s National Team will be looking to build on their momentum in Seattle against Australia. While the Stars and Stripes demolished Paraguay 4-1 in Southern California, Australia came away with an impressive 2-0 win against Türkiye in their opening match. Therefore, whoever wins on Friday will take sole control of first place in Group D.

High Stakes Clash for Group D Supremacy

In contrast to Türkiye, whom the U.S. lost 2-1 to last year, the U.S. has won each of its last two meetings against Australia, the latest being a 2-1 win in October.

While the USA will be aware that a stalemate will be good enough to see them remain atop the leaderboard, they’ll be looking to prevail with all three points and effectively wrap up the top spot. And, there’s reason to believe that they will get the job done in Washington State.

Pulisic Injury Concern Looms Large

The biggest question mark surrounds the status of USA’s creative talisman – Christian Pulisic.

After playing a vital role in his team’s early onslaught, Pulisic was subbed off at halftime with an injury, and he has spent the past few days training individually with a compression sleeve wrapped around his left calf. It’s unlikely that Mauricio Pochettino would risk playing an unfit Pulisic so early into the tournament, but the question is, who exactly replaces him?

Timothy Weah, Brenden Aaronson and Alejandro Zendejas are all contenders, although Giovanni Reyna may very well be the frontrunner after his superb trivela finish last week.

USA Attack Should Still Deliver

Whoever it is, USA should have enough firepower to come away with all three points. While they might find it hard to replicate their three-goal first half, we’re nevertheless backing their early heroics to continue.

Team USA has scored in the first half in nine of their last 12 matches, peppering the opposition with their fierce pressing and well-worked, intricate possession play. Australia, meanwhile, has shown a tendency to sit back and soak up the pressure, bouncing around the ropes and waiting for their opponents to tire themselves out.

Possession vs Counterattack

That strategy worked against the Turks, but it might not work against a USA team that, in addition to playing with momentum, will be playing with the raucous support of Lumen Field.

The biggest key for USA will be to both continue generating high-quality chances as well as constrain the Socceroos into their own half, knowing the immense quality that they possess on the counter with the likes of Nestory Irakunda. It’s all but guaranteed that they will have more possession and more shots on goal, but the onus will once again be on Folarin Balogun as they look to convert those chances.

USA to Continue Momentum

Balogun has been a menace in the final third since switching over from England, and after scoring a brace against La Albirroja, there’s more than enough reason to believe that he will continue his sensational form up top. We’re expecting USA to score in the first half, we’re expecting Balogun to rack up the shots on goal and add to his scoring tally, and we’re also expecting Team USA to come away with the victory. Having won 3-1 and 2-1 in their past two encounters, don’t be surprised if we get another match where both teams find the back of the net.

Bovada Trading Team Predictions: Best Bets

Christian Pulisic- Soccer

While many of the 2026 World Cup opening matches saw huge underdogs draw with tournament favorites, the United States came ready to play on home soil. Their 4-1 dominance over Paraguay featured the first time they scored four goals in World Cup history, and forward Folarin Balogun became the first U.S. player to score twice in 96 years.

In their USA vs. Paraguay predictions, the Bovada Trading Team accurately anticipated Balogun’s breakout. What are their predictions for USA vs. Australia at 3 p.m. ET?

Why These Wagers?

“USA deserves favoritism, particularly with home support behind them, but Australia possesses enough pace and attacking threat to ensure this is a far more competitive encounter than many expect. Also, Paraguay did manage to breach the American back line, something Australia will have noted with interest.”

“With both sides looking dangerous on offense, and neither side playing convincing defense, goals are the obvious angle. Over 3.5 Goals could be the play, particularly if the game opens up in the latter stages.”

“That said, players could also find more value in alternative goal lines and team goal markets. Both teams have shown they can create chances at will. If the match develops into the end-to-end contest many expect, there could be opportunities to capitalize on a range of high-scoring outcomes beyond the traditional odds.”

The Trading Team On Both Squads

“Australia was at its most dangerous on the counterattack, repeatedly exploiting the space left by Türkiye. EFL Championship duo Mo Toure and Nestory Irankunda were particularly impressive, with their pace and direct running causing problems throughout.”

“However, there were nervous moments when Turkey threatened. Against a stronger opponent, Australia may not be afforded the same margin for error.”

“The USA, meanwhile, could hardly have made a more convincing start to their home World Cup. Paraguay was swept aside in a performance that showcased the attacking talent at manager Mauricio Pochettino’s disposal. Christian Pulisic pulled the strings throughout, while Florian Balogun’s pace and movement rewarded those who followed our pre-tournament advice.”

USA’s second Group Stage match is against Australia on June 19, 2026. Australia reached the Round of 16 in the 2022 World Cup but has a shaky record in recent friendlies against American and South American squads.

If Team USA handled Paraguay in Match 1, this is their chance to punch their ticket to the Last 32 quickly. If not, the pressure to put away Australia decisively ramps up. Either way, Match 2 is where Group D starts to take shape – and where mistakes start to matter.

Australia won’t make it easy. But Team USA should once again be the favorites in the USA vs. Australia World Cup betting odds.

Match Details

USA vs Australia is the second Group D World Cup matchup, set at Lumen Field in Seattle, Washington. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. ET. Both teams enter Match 2 with their Group Stage campaigns underway, making this a pivotal point in the standings. Other Group D teams include Paraguay and Turkey.

As with all World Cup group matches, a win earns 3 points, a draw earns 1, and a loss earns none. The top two teams advance from Group D automatically, along with eight third-place teams across all 12 groups.

Group D Context and What’s at Stake

For Team USA, the importance of this matchup all comes down to how they performed in Match 1 against Paraguay.

If the USA won Match 1: USA arrives in Seattle with three points already secured. A win here would all but guarantee a place in the Last 32, allowing them to control Group D heading into the final match.

If the USA drew Match 1: After only earning 1 point in the opener, USA can’t afford another slip. A win here becomes essential to stay on track for qualification.

If the USA lost Match 1: The pressure is immediate. With Turkey a worthy contender and Paraguay sitting pretty with 3 points themselves, another loss would leave the USA staring at an early exit. This becomes a must-win scenario.

Recent Matchups

Excluding their first Group Stage match against Paraguay, USA has been up and down in their last handful of friendlies.

In September, they struggled against South Korea, losing 2-0, but bounced back to finish their Asian tour on a high with a 2-0 win over Japan. From there, they built momentum with a 1-1 draw against Ecuador on October 11, 2025, followed by a 2-1 win over Australia four days later. The run continued with a 2-1 victory against Paraguay and a dominant 5-1 win over Uruguay.

Australia’s recent play is also inconsistent. They picked up a solid 1-0 win over Canada but followed it with a 2-1 loss to America. That result was part of a three-game losing streak, as they were then held scoreless in defeats to Venezuela (1-0) and Colombia (3-0). They’ve since steadied with wins over Cameroon (1-0) and Curacao (5-1) in March 2026.

Head-to-Head Record

Australia and America haven’t met much in the 2000s, but those meetings have favored Team USA:

  • Oct 15, 2025: USA 2–1 Australia (Friendly)
  • Jun 5, 2010: Australia 1–3 USA (Friendly)

In the more recent meeting, Australia got out to an early 1-0 lead in the 19th minute from defender Jordan Bos, but couldn’t hold on as Haji Wright scored two goals for America to secure the win.

Key Players to Watch

For Team USA, everything runs through Christian Pulisic – he remains the creative engine. Unfortunately, he’s been scoreless in the final eight games before the 2026 World Cup, and if he doesn’t break out in Match 1, the slump could continue versus Australia.

In goal, Matt Freese is expected to start, having featured in the last 12 matches. If there are any issues, Matt Turner is the likely backup option, bringing valuable World Cup experience.

Australia’s midfield is anchored by Ryan Teague and Aiden O’Neill, providing balance. In goal, Mathew Ryan offers experience and stability, with Joe Gauci serving as the developing backup option.

Betting Markets

In World Cup betting markets, USA is expected to be favored on the moneyline playing at home, and that should hold unless major injury news shifts the market. Moneyline bets allow bettors to pick a winner outright, with the draw also available.

“Both Teams to Score” props are worth watching here. USA has been solid in scoring versus average opponents, while Australia has shown it can find goals even in tough matchups. The total will likely be set at 2.5 goals. Historically, World Cup odds in the Group Stage tend to lean under, as teams play more cautiously and prioritize avoiding point deductions.

A value play could be Christian Pulisic being an anytime goalscorer, as he’s too talented to remain scoreless throughout the 2026 World Cup.
