The upsets weren’t as prominent in Week 9, but still had some shockers in the latter half of the AP Top 25. They include:
The Memphis Tigers scored the final 17 points to upset No. 18 South Florida. Washington beat No. 23 Illinois 42-25 behind quarterback Desmond Williams Jr.’s four-touchdowns. Houston got its first win over a ranked squad with a 24-16 win over No. 24 Arizona State.

Main Event Matchups
Penn State Nittany Lions (3-4) at No. 1 Ohio State Buckeyes (7-0)
- Odds: Ohio State – 20.5
- Total: 43
- Time: 12 p.m. ET
- FOX
How the mighty have fallen. The Nittany Lions were the No. 2 team in the country for the first five weeks, but four straight losses to No. 6 Oregon, UCLA, Northwestern, and Iowa has gotten their coach fired and dropped them out of the AP Top 25. Thankfully, they got a bye to lick their wounds and try to salvage a squad that was a College Football Playoff (CFP) threat.
That said, QB Drew Allar is not coming back after breaking his ankle against Northwestern. And his replacement, freshman Ethan Grunkemeyer, posted just 93 yards and threw two interceptions against Iowa. Grunkemeyer now has to face the No. 1 defense in the country at ‘The Horseshoe,’ a squad that allows less than a touchdown per game (5.9 points). Victory seems impossible – the 20.5 spread? We’ll see.
The Buckeyes haven’t lost against the spread (ATS) this year, according to opening odds; they have a 6-0-1 record with a push against Ohio in Week 3.
No. 9 Vanderbilt Commodores (7-1) at No. 20 Texas Longhorns (6-2)
- Odds: Texas -2
- Total: 45.5
- Time: 12 p.m. ET
- ABC
This is a tough battle between AP rankings and oddsmakers. It makes total sense that Vanderbilt is ranked No. 9 and Texas is at No. 20. The Commodores have won the games they’re supposed to win, lost to the current No. 4 team in the nation, and are coming off back-to-back wins over ranked SEC opponents (No. 10 LSU, No. 15 Missouri).
But it also makes sense that they’ve opened as +2 underdogs at Texas. The Longhorns have been wildly inconsistent behind the wobbly arm of Arch Manning. But they recently displayed promise as an offense by scoring 24 unanswered in the fourth quarter and overtime to beat Mississippi State 45-38. Manning had his most prolific game with 346 passing yards and four total touchdowns.
Vanderbilt has been the better team this season, but Texas is at home and has shown offensive growth, making this game essentially a coin flip. Vanderbilt is 6-2 ATS and has covered the last two weeks. Texas has struggled all year as a wager, going 2-6 ATS.
No. 10 Miami Hurricanes (6-1) at SMU Mustangs (5-3)
- Odds: Miami -12.5
- Total: 51
- Time: 12 p.m. ET
- ESPN
At first glance, this looks like another get-right spot for Miami after their 24-21 loss to Louisville as 10-point favorites. But overlooking SMU would be a mistake. Louisville’s upset win came largely because Miami running back Mark Fletcher Jr. was bottled up – just eight carries for 18 yards – which forced quarterback Carson Beck to shoulder the offense and led to four interceptions. The Mustangs could pose a similar challenge, boasting one of the nation’s stingiest run defenses and ranking among just 16 programs allowing fewer than 100 rushing yards per game.
Miami is 2-2 ATS as a double-digit favorite. Meanwhile, the Mustangs are only 2-5 ATS but have covered in two straight weeks.
No. 18 Oklahoma Sooners (6-2) at No. 14 Tennessee Volunteers (6-2)
- Odds: Tennessee -3
- Total: 56.5
- Time: 7:30 p.m. ET
- ABC
It’s becoming clear that Oklahoma and Tennessee sit right on the edge of the 12-team College Football Playoff picture. Both have shown flashes against top-ranked opponents but have yet to deliver the signature win that would solidify their spot. It makes this SEC matchup a clear must-win. There are only four games left for both programs; Tennessee’s only other ranked opponent after Oklahoma is No. 9 Vanderbilt. The Sooners, meanwhile, have No. 4 Alabama in Week 11, but it’s tough to expect an upset against the Crimson Tide if they can’t get by the Volunteers.
Oklahoma has had impressive covers against Michigan in Week 2 and South Carolina in Week 8, but they’ve gone 3-4-1 on the year. Tennessee has been inconsistent as a favorite, going 3-3 ATS.
