2026 NCAA Basketball Season Preview

When you look closely at NCAA basketball odds to win the men’s national championship, it feels like oddsmakers are as uncertain as the rest of us.

Florida tops the AP Top 25 and has the best NCAA Championship odds, but +525 feels like an underdog price. AP no. 2 Duke’s price is almost the same at +550, and Illinois is ranked third but offers a bigger payout than both combined at +1300.

Notice we didn’t mention Michigan, the defending national champion? With their main stars jumping to the NBA, they rank 16th on the AP poll and currently have +1800 odds.

Quick 2025-26 NCAA Basketball Season Recap

The 2025-26 season opened with Purdue atop the AP poll, Houston second, defending champion Florida third, and eventual champion Michigan starting seventh. By April, Dusty May’s Wolverines had turned that promise into a 37-3 finish, beating UConn 69-63 for Michigan’s first national championship since 1989 and the Big Ten’s first since 2000. Florida, the 2024-25 champion, didn’t even make it past the second round despite being a No. 1 seed.

NCAA Basketball Championship Contenders

Florida +525

Todd Golden’s Gators return four starters: Thomas Haugh, Alex Condon, Boogie Fland and Rueben Chinyelu. That continuity helps explain Florida’s No. 1 ranking and top odds.

Florida is the favorite, but +525 offers value only if you believe the Gators have better than a 16% chance of winning the championship. They entered last March as a No. 1 seed, but Iowa eliminated them in the second round.

Duke +550

Duke brings back Patrick Ngongba II, Caleb Foster, Cayden Boozer and Dame Sarr. John Blackwell adds another established option, while freshman Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje enters as the ACC’s preseason Rookie of the Year.

The No. 2 Blue Devils face a demanding schedule that includes Florida, Illinois, UConn and Michigan State. The bright side is it should reveal whether the returning core and newcomers are ready for a 2026-27 run.

Illinois +1300

The Illini rank third nationally after reaching last season’s Final Four, and offer solid value at +1300.

David Mirkovic and Andrej Stojakovic both earned preseason All-Big Ten recognition. Mirkovic averaged 13.3 points and eight rebounds last season; Stojakovic supplied 13.5 points while shooting 50% from the field.

The Fighting Illini return five rotation players, giving them an experienced foundation that always has value in March. But will that production translate when they face the strongest opponents?

Michigan State +1800 and Michigan +1800

Michigan State starts sixth in the AP poll behind point guard Jeremy Fears Jr., last season’s national assists leader at 9.4 per game. His court creativity gives the Spartans a clear offensive identity.

Michigan carries the defending champion label but opens at No. 16 despite identical futures prices.

Other Futures

UConn (+1100), Arizona (+2500) and Houston (+2200) also belong on the contender list. Arizona begins fifth in the AP poll, while Houston starts tenth.

Potential Futures Value?

Missouri added forwards Bryson Tiller, Jamier Jones, Jaylen Carey and Toni Bryant, plus guards Kennard Davis Jr. and Jason Crowe Jr. At +6500, the Tigers are a dark horse if their new rotation clicks.

Wooden Award Favorites to Watch

Michigan State point guard Jeremy Fears Jr. leads the John Wooden Award odds at +825, followed by Kansas freshman forward Tyran Stokes at +1100.

The contrast between the two is interesting: Fears Jr. is a 6’2 traditional point guard with established production and preseason AP All-America recognition. Stokes is a 6’8 true freshman, a modern point-forward in every sense, with the ability to take over in multiple ways. Stokes lacks experience, but he makes up for it with explosiveness and versatility. If he cashes in this year, he’ll be the third straight freshman to win the Wooden Award.

Other favorites include Vanderbilt guard Tyler Tanner at +1200. Florida forward Thomas Haugh is +1400, with Illinois forward David Mirkovic at +1800.

Early Games to Watch and NCAA Basketball Betting Tips

  • Circle Duke-Michigan State on November 10, Illinois at Duke on November 17, and Duke at Florida on December 1. Each offers a useful test of the leading futures candidates.
  • In the 2025,26 season, favorites of 20 points or more went 271-3 straight up (SU) but only 136-138 against the spread (ATS).
  • Smaller programs can offer spread value against bigger schools: Power-conference teams went 356-27 SU against mid-majors but just 181-202 ATS.
  • Despite scoring rising early in 2025-26, out of 1,245 records games, 641 went under the total while 604 went over.

Women’s NCAA Basketball Outlook

South Carolina tops the women’s preseason AP poll, followed by UConn and USC. The Women’s National Championship odds list South Carolina and UConn at +250, with USC at +450 and Texas at +950.
