Gymnastics: Simone Biles Shines Again
Day six of Olympic competition was headlined yet again by gymnast Simone Biles. The American stole the show when she won the women’s individual all-around final, her second gold medal in this year’s Olympics. It was a historic meeting between the previous two gold medal winners of this event as Biles competed against United States teammate Suni Lee, who took the top place in 2020. Both women saw the podium as Lee, with an ear-to-ear grin, took home bronze.

Historical Podium Finish
Suni Lee is just the second gymnast to see the podium in this event after taking gold in the previous Olympics. Romania’s Nadia Comăneci pulled off this back-to-back feat in 1980. This is also not the first time we have seen two Americans on the podium. In 2016 both Aly Raisman and Simone Biles medalled in the individual all-around.
Biles’ Gold-Clenching Performance
Biles gold-clinching performance began with her best score of the day on the vault. The decorated Texan scored a half-point better than her qualifying round on Sunday. After strong performances from Brazilian Rebeca Andrade and Algerian Kaylia Nemour on the uneven bars, Biles dropped to third. She roared back to the top with her error-free routine on the balance beam, a particular skill where she is the reigning world champion. She sealed her fate with her phenomenal floor routine. The crowd roared with excitement as she scored 15.066 and won her 6th career gold medal. Brazilian Rebeca Andrade earned her second straight silver medal in this event.
Simone Biles is the winningest Olympic gymnast in United States history, now with nine medals overall. If this is Biles final Olympics, it sure has been a pleasure to watch the greatest of all time.
Men’s Golf: Day One Highlights
A star-studded men’s golf tournament began Thursday at Le Golf National about 30 minutes outside of central Paris. American Xander Schauffele won gold in 2020 and is competing alongside World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, Wyndham Clark, and Collin Morikawa for Team USA. After one day of competition, Schauffele leads all Americans at 6-under par which stands in second place. He is fresh off a victory at The Open Championship just two weeks ago and started off his Olympic run strong with a 5-under par on the front nine. Scheffler, World No. 1, also had a good day sitting at 6th place at 4-under par. Morikawa is tied for 29th, and Clark is sitting outside the top 50 shooting 4-over for the round.
PGA household name Hideki Matsuyama sits atop the leaderboard at 8-under for Japan; one shot shy of the course record. American golf fans are familiar with his greatness as he became the first Japanese golfer to win a Men’s Major Championship at the 2021 Masters.
The tournament will span four days with Matsuyama, Scheffler, and Schauffele as heavy favorites.

Swimming: Ledecky’s Historic Achievements
Thursday’s action also served as a coronation for swimmer Katie Ledecky as she became the most decorated American woman in Olympic history with still one event to go this weekend. Ledecky won her 13th medal when Team USA took silver in the 4×200-meter relay just behind Australia who set a new Olympic record with their gold medal finish. Just a day before, Ledecky won gold in the women’s 1500-meter freestyle and set a new Olympic record herself. She has one more event on Friday, the 800-meter freestyle, where she also holds the world record and is the three-time defending Olympic champion. A top finish would be her 9th gold medal, breaking the record she currently shares with American Jenny Thompson.
