It has taken the best part of two years for the highly anticipated professional boxing match between YouTube influencer-turned-boxer Jake Paul and Cruiserweight Tommy Fury to take place. Tommy controversially withdrew from the previous two arranged fights and Jake Paul doesn’t trust Fury to make the third fight either; he’s already found a back-up fighter in UFC and Bare Knuckle FS veteran, “Platinum” Mike Perry.

On February 26th, Saudi Arabia will host the boxing show billed as “THE TRUTH”. The drama surrounding Jake Paul and Tommy Fury has everything trashy reality shows would be envious of. We’ve had explosive rows, bitter name-calling, accusations of fake injuries, travel chaos, shirtless face-offs, and there has even been an ill-timed birth announcement. Real Housewives, eat your hearts out.

Jake Paul posted on Twitter a day after the fight was announced “Tommy has no excuses now… baby’s born, money’s massive. Immigration no issue. Tyson promises he & Papa will make Tommy retire from boxing & change his last name if he can’t beat the YouTuber.”

Paul refers to a declaration made by Heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, that should Tommy Fury lose this fight, Tommy will be forced to retire from professional boxing. This is how seriously he is being urged to take this fight.

Tommy Fury will be the first genuine professional boxer Jake Paul has faced. Paul comes in with a record of 6-0 wins (4 by way of KO), and Fury at 8-0 wins (4 by way of KO). Fury has warned Jake Paul that his 20m followers will not be able to save him inside the ring when the pair finally seek to settle their very public feud.

This past weekend, Jake Paul made the transatlantic flight over to the UK to face-off with Fury in the ring at the Artur Beterbiev vs Anthony Yarde fight in London. The pair had to be separated as they pushed each other during a fiery face-off and fans were left puzzled by Fury’s decision to take his shirt off before the stare down.

On the same evening (and after defacing a Jake Paul poster inside the venue), Tyson Fury was unusually complimentary of Paul. During an interview with Sky Sports Boxing Fury said “He’s a decent boxer, I’ve seen him train and watched his fights. He’s a decent novice professional. I would say as he’s as good as he should be at this stage”. Fury also added “Tommy has got to take this really seriously, he can’t just come to the ice cream parlour and not train. He’s got to have good sparring and do the job when he is in the ring”.

With another four weeks to go until fight night, it is inevitable we shall see more explosive exchanges and social media trash talk between the pair, and I for one am here for it.
