Jake Paul vs AJ Odds

Is it time to take Jake Paul seriously? Just when we were all done with being hooked into another exhibition featuring retired or undersized fighters, Paul read the room and lined up a true challenge: former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua.

Joshua is not retired; he’s not 150 pounds; and he’s not a journeyman. He’s a two-time champion, a gold medalist, and had his last major heavyweight fight just last year.

Is Paul insane? Or does he realize that he’s finally learned enough from his 13 fights to take on some real challenges?

We preview the matchup, provide the Jake Paul vs. Anthony Joshua odds, and share where the action is headed before the bout airs on Netflix on Friday, December 19 at 8 p.m. ET.

Jake Paul Breakdown

  • Record: 12-1 (7 Knockouts, 5 Decisions)
  • Age: 28
  • Height: 6 feet, 1 inch
  • Reach: 76 inches
  • Weight: TBD (Avg. weight 200 pounds)

Jake Paul, AKA “El Gallo de Dorado,” has been banking on box office exhibitions for the last five years and has faced some big names from inside and outside the sport. He’s beaten UFC legends Tyron Woodley, Anderson Silva, and Nate Diaz, and then defeated boxing HOFers Mike Tyson and Julia Cesar Chavez.

Paul is a power puncher who uses his jab to set up heavy shots to the body before going upstairs. His style has consistently favored him against lighter opponents or fighters with diminished durability. He’s also effective at dirty boxing and fighting in the clinch, again, a skill displayed against smaller/weaker boxers or inexperienced UFC fighters.

But again, his power jab is effective and can double-tap unsuspecting fighters, setting up his power shots.

Obviously, size and power won’t be to his advantage this time as the heaviest he’s fought at is 227 pounds – Joshua’s weight hovers around 245-250 pounds.

In most of his fights, Paul earned the majority of the action from fans, including 55% against Tyson and 73% against Tommy Fury. He defeated Tyson via unanimous decision but lost to Fury.

Currently, this fight has the second-most action against him at Bovada, with 74.6% of the action on Joshua. It was 77.9% against him versus Andre August on December 13, 2023, and Paul ended that fight with a shocking first-round KO.

Anthony Joshua Breakdown

  • Record: 28-4 (25 Knockouts, 3 Decisions)
  • Age: 36
  • Height: 6 feet, 6 inches
  • Reach: 82 inches
  • Weight: TBD (Avg. weight 245-250 pounds)

If you’ve wagered or watched a heavyweight fight in the last decade, you’ve heard of Anthony Joshua. He reached his peak with a TKO of Wladimir Klitschko, setting up potential super fights with Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder. But legend-making moments never materialized after a shocking loss to underwhelming challenger Andy Ruiz Jr. He avenged that loss immediately, but back-to-back defeats against unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk, followed by a knockout loss to Daniel Dubois last July, have signaled he may be on the downside of his career.

Joshua is all about power, precision, and his imposing physical presence. He has heavy hands, delivers direct attacks, and finishes fights with concussive knockouts. However, his heavy feet and lumbering movement from the torso up have ultimately left him open to big hits and surprise upsets.

He needs a crowd-pleasing win over Paul to get his box-office clout back on track.
