Why Role Players Matter
In today’s NBA, the spotlight almost always shines on the superstars. The MVP candidates, the All-NBA selections, and the guys dropping 30 points a night dominate the conversation. But if you really love basketball, you know championships and winning cultures are built just as much on the backs of role players – look no further than the depth of recent Finals teams like the Thunder, Pacers, 2024 Celtics and even the Luka Mavericks.
Some of my favorite players in the league fall squarely into that category. They’re not always leading SportsCenter, but every time you watch them play, it’s obvious they impact winning in ways that go far beyond the box score.

Cason Wallace: The Prototype 3-and-D Guard
Take Cason Wallace, for example. Wallace is the type of guard every contender wishes they had. His defensive instincts are elite for such a young player, and he plays with a level of poise that feels rare for a guard still early in his career. He will absolutely lock you up, and if he was on any other team, he could easily be a ~18 point per game scorer. This guy is about to make a ton of money on his next contract.
Jamal Shead: Defensive Engine & Energy Shifter
Another player who embodies a similar mindset is Jamal Shead. Shead built his reputation as one of the toughest guards in college basketball back at Houston, and that identity has translated to the pro level. He’s a bulldog defensively and plays with a motor that never seems to slow down. Guards like Shead change the energy of a game just by picking up full court and making life miserable for opposing ball handlers while also hitting open 3s and running the offense for the Raptors.
The Spencer Brothers: Unique Paths, Instant Impact
Then there are the Spencer brothers—Pat Spencer and Cam Spencer—who bring a unique flavor to the league. Pat’s journey alone makes him one of the most interesting role players around, transitioning from being one of the best lacrosse players in the world to carving out a role in the NBA. Meanwhile, Cam plays with the kind of swagger and shooting confidence that instantly energizes a lineup.
Christian Braun: The Ultimate Glue Guy
Christian Braun deserves so much more credit for the success of the Nuggets over the last 5 years. Guarding the opposing team’s best player, consistent hustle, some nights scoring 20, some nights scoring 5. Doesn’t matter – Braun constantly is evolving his game to fit the needs of what Denver needs every night. Love it.
Amir Coffey: Quietly Consistent Scorer
Another underrated player who consistently makes winning plays is Amir Coffey. I’ve been a Coffey fan since he was playing at Minnesota, and I really think he’s one of the more undoubtedly talented scorers in the league.
T.J. McConnell: Heart, Hustle, and Pure Hoop IQ
And then there’s T.J. McConnell, one of the ultimate fan-favorite role players in the NBA. McConnell has built an entire career out of hustle, IQ, and relentless effort. Whether he’s diving for loose balls, picking someone’s pocket in the backcourt, or orchestrating an offense with precision, McConnell plays the game with a passion that’s impossible not to appreciate. And he nearly won the Pacers a championship last year too – even in Game 7 after Hali went down!
