#10 – David Tyree’s Helmet Catch
The mighty New England Patriots never looked mightier than in the 2007-08 season, where they went undefeated all season up till Super Bowl XLII.
Then Eli Manning and David Tyree entered the picture and ruined the party for Tom Brady and Patriots nation. On a wild play late in the 4th quarter, Manning somehow got out of a surefire sack and winged the ball to Tyree, who caught the ball while somehow squeezing it against his helmet as Rodney Harrison tried to break up the play.
It was 14-10 for the Pats at the time, with just over a minute left in the game. The Giants would go on to score a touchdown a few plays later and take home the Lombardi Trophy.
#9 – Santonio Holmes Toe-Tap TD
His name is not especially memorable in the Pittsburgh Steelers’ iconic Super Bowl history, but Santonio Holmes won the Super Bowl for Steeltown back in the 2008-09 season.
With under a minute left and trailing by 3 points, the Steelers needed a small miracle to win the game. QB Ben Roethlisberger fired a pass deep into the end zone, and Holmes extended every inch of his body to snag the ball and keep both feet in bounds. It was a huge win for the Steelers for their sixth Super Bowl title, while the high-flying Cardinals offense, led by QB Kurt Warner, could only watch from the sidelines and watch their first Super Bowl win.
#8 – Kurt Warner to Isaac Bruce 73-Yard TD
Kurt Warner went from bagging groceries to becoming a Super Bowl quarterback, and his amazing arm was on full display when he aired out a bomb to wide receiver Isaac Bruce in Super Bowl XXXIV in the year 2000.
The Los Angeles Rams’ dynamic duo beat the Tennessee Titans with that TD, scored with under two minutes to go in the game, and Warner went on to become the Super Bowl MVP. Beats bagging groceries…
#7 – Lynn Swann’s Incredible Catch
We’re headed way back to single-digit Roman numerals for this one, as the Steeler’s Lynn Swann made an incredible catch during Super Bowl X in 1976.
Swann set a record that game for receiving yards in a Super Bowl, and Pittsburgh won that game to make it two wins in a row in the NFL’s ultimate game. They would go on to win 4 times in 5 years, but Swann’s catch – while tipping the ball and then diving over a Dallas Cowboys defender – remains one of the biggest highlights from that era.
#6 – Scott Norwood’s Field Goal Troubles
The best Super Bowl moments aren’t always for the winners…
The Buffalo Bills’ kicker went “Wide Right” in the last seconds of Super Bowl XXV, and it kicked off 4 straight years of Bills’ losses in the Super Bowl. It’s an iconic image still. But it was 47 yards, in a pressure-packed stadium, and in the last seconds of what was the closest Super Bowl finish ever at the time, a 20-19 win by the New York Giants. Many other kickers would also have gone Wide-Right.
#5 – Julian Edelman and the Patriots’ Record Comeback
Super Bowl LI, in 2017, featured the most incredible comeback in Super Bowl history. Tom Brady and the New England Patriots came back from 28-3 down to beat the Atlanta Falcons.
Part of that comeback – and what helped keep a crucial late drive alive – was Julian Edelman’s acrobatic juggling act that resulted in an amazing catch.
Spinning around and diving for a tipped ball in the midst of three Falcons defenders, Edelman plucked the pass just inches from the ground to keep the Pats rolling to the eventual winning TD.
#4 – Joe Montana and the 92-Yard TD Drive
In a career filled with some of the best Super Bowl moments, San Francisco 49ers’ QB Joe Montana stood out with this epic late drive to defeat the Cincinnati Bengals in SB XXIII.
The Niners were down 16-13 and starting from their own 8-yard line with only three minutes left in the game. Montana completed 8 of 9 passes and hit John Taylor with the game-winning TD, with only 34 seconds to play.
Montana won 3 Super Bowl MVPs (a record tied only recently by Patrick Mahomes) in his career. Funny enough, this was the only Super Bowl where he didn’t win the award (it went to Jerry Rice).
#3: Joe Namath and the SB Guarantee
The Baltimore Colts were heavily favored to win Super Bowl III in 1969, but New York Jets’ star QB Joe Namath had other plans.
The flamboyant star known as Broadway Joe issued a “guarantee” that New York would win (no word on what people would receive if the Jets had actually lost the game). And he played exceptionally, winning the MVP and cementing his legend who could walk the walk.
#2 – Mike Jones and the Game-Saving Tackle
Defensive players don’t get much love when it comes to the best Super Bowl moments, especially undrafted vets with ordinary names.
But then there’s Mike Jones. In Super Bowl XXXIV, the Tennessee Titans were driving and looked to be headed for a last-second TD to tie the Rams. With just 6 seconds left, Jones vacuumed Rams receiver Kevin Dyson at the 1-yard line on what looked to be a sure-scoring play.
The tackle ended the game and secured the Rams’ 23-16 Super Bowl win.
#1 – Patrick Mahomes and the Overtime Drive
Patrick Mahomes is looking for a three-peat for him and his Kansas City Chiefs this Sunday in Super Bowl 59.
If he can start the game like he finished last year’s, he’s got a great shot. Mahomes led a 13-play, 75-yard drive in overtime in Super Bowl LVIII, with amazing stats to go along with his incredible poise. He was 8 for 8 in passing, and also ran for 27 yards himself. It’s like he put the team on his back and willed them to victory.
